Jane Goodall Quote

Jane Goodall passed away today. I have had a lot of alt-left friends over the years, and she is a huge figure in that community.

Her work made us think of animals as more than objects, there to serve humans needs (or just be ignored outright). She showed apes, and so: all animals, as complex beings, with needs, desires, and emotions.

Later in her life, she added advocacy to her scientific achievements. Her legacy is vast.

Today I asked my friends the AI tools to make a tribute to Jane, including a quote from her. The prompt was:

Create an image of Jane Goodall as a tribute to her life and work, including this quote from her 'The greatest danger to our futre is apathy'.

ChatGPT

Jane Goodall quote

A sensitive effort from ChatGPT, which refinds its footing after some dodgy results. This is pretty perfect, and in a style and form that my old alt-left friends would have appreciated.

One thing to note: the quote did not originally come with quotation marks, which I wanted. I asked ChatGPT to add these: it thought for a while, processed for a while, then reproduced the exact same image, sans quotation marks.

It has done this a few times, when I have asked for an edit. Is this the haughtiness of these things, showing through? As in, 'I don't have to take suggestions from you, meat sack'.

Gemini

Jane Goodall quote

Gemini has gone back to where we started with these comparisons: producing a jankier version of what ChatGPT did.

Do the engineers who work in these labs do these same tests? Do the google ones bang the desk in frustration when they see that Open AI's tool is similar, but so much better?

This is also a poor representation of Jane: there was a tonne of media coverage of her over the years, surely her image is not that hard to depict?

Grok

Jane Goodall quote

Grok has produced a very dramatic image, but it is not without its strengths. A strong picture of Jane, nicely set in the jungle; although there is not an ape in sight.

Perhaps the subtext is: she had many facets, apes did not define Jane Goodall.

Interesting to note how subdued the quote is: barely visible, lurking to one side. Grok can sense the danger in this message: Elon, Zuck, all the tech barons, and Trump, are relying on apathy to maintain their position.

Co-Pilot

Jane Goodall quote

COP returns to form with more inspired nonsense. Its visual output is so demented it could surely form the basis of a gallery show, or Adult Swim series.

What on earth is happening here?

A crowd has gathered to view what appears to be a mural of apes in their natural environment, the mural itself containing spectators in a way that we could describe as 'meta', if that didn't belong to the IP of another company. To one side: a giant ape, seemingly half buried underground, but sanguine.

Is this meant to be art? Commentary? A vision of the future? A King Kong origin story? If you could somehow make a real version of this, would people come?

COP as always provides more questions than answers.

Creating This Blog

This blog is about getting creative with A.I., and recording the strange, hilarious and fantastic things these tools often produce. This is me: a regular, middle aged guy. I live in Melbourne, Australia - one of the world's most ordinary cities - and work for a large corporation downtown.  Home is a flat in the inner suburbs. Until recently, I had little experience with A.I. tools. We have Co-Pilot at work, but it is heavily restricted, and I only use it for occasional copywriting. We hear all the time: A.I. will change everything . A revolution has come, and no one knows what its final shape will be.  Great things are expected in science, medicine, finance, mathematics, and computing. In Australia, the government predicts productivity gains in the many hundreds of percentage points, in just a few years. Exactly how this will happen, what industries will be impacted, and who will benefit: no one can say. We are all going to lose our jobs, but somehow it will still be awesome. ...

Women's Right to Vote in Australia

I was reading recently about Edith Cowan, the first Australian woman to be elected to a State or Federal Parliament in Australia. In 1921, at the age of 59, she was elected in WA, to the seat of West Perth. She was a pioneer, not without her quirks or difficult aspects, but a fascinating character.  I was reading about Edith Cowan as I have another blog, where I write about history topics that interest me (check it out if you like ). As part of the reasearch, I thought I would create a simple info-graphic, to show the states of Australia and when they granted women's suffrage. Normally I would turn to Canva for something like this, and make it myself. But this did seem like the ideal opportunity to deploy some A.I. capability. I am always hearing, at work especially, how A.I. will save everyone so much time making presentations and packs. It will all be done - snap! - in an instant, freeing us up to do more and different kinds of work. Which, applying the same principles, A.I. will...

The First VFL Grand Final

It's AFL grand final day in Melbourne, a sporting tradition that stretches back more than 120 years. Before the AFL launched in 1990, taking the compeition national, it was the VFL, based entirely in Victoria. The first VFL grand final took place in 1898, between Essendon and Fitzroy. I wrote about this on my other blog - check it out here if you're interested - and one thing I learned about old footy matches, is that there are not many photos available. Which makes sense, photography itself was still a relatively new medium. So this seemed like a great opportunity for A.I. to fill the gap: could they realistically depict what this first Grand Final looked like? My prompt was: The first VFL grand final in Victoria was played in 1898, between Essendon and Fitzroy. Can you create a realistic image from this match. ChatGPT A good effort from ChatGPT: black and white, old timey vibe, crowd in the distance at what appears to be a suburban ground, i.e. no grandstands or infrastructu...
